Your images are part of the lesson. Make their meaning accessible.

Diagrams, screenshots, and illustrations carry information students need. Meaningful alt text gives students who use screen readers a description of that visual information. It communicates what an image contributes to the lesson.

Accessibility shapes the student experience.

In a University of Waterloo survey, 1,758 undergraduate and graduate students, with and without disabilities, rated the importance of 38 course accessibility practices. In their written comments, students reported that course accessibility affects their learning, motivation, sense of belonging, and well-being. They also identified accessibility as a factor in choosing or dropping courses (University of Waterloo, 2025).

Research on inclusive course design reinforces that educational value. A meta-analysis of 20 studies, with learners from pre-kindergarten to adult, found higher average academic achievement with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) than with business-as-usual instruction (King-Sears et al., 2023). University research also links inclusive teaching practices with students’ sense of competence and their approaches to studying. In a survey of 109 undergraduates, UDL practices were associated with deeper learning through students’ sense of competence and autonomy (Rosa et al., 2025).

Making course materials accessible deserves a place in the everyday work of teaching.

Faculty need tools that fit their workload.

In a 2025 survey of 2,508 U.S. faculty, the leading barriers to creating accessible course content were (Anthology, 2025):

Respondents could select up to three challenges. In the survey’s white paper, time appears as two answer options: “Lack of time to update content” (29%) and “Lack of time to review content for issues” (28%). The full wording of the other two options is “Lack of training or knowledge about content accessibility best practices” (29%) and “Lack of training or knowledge about available accessibility tools” (27%) (Anthology white paper).

These are practical obstacles that call for practical solutions.

Edit multiple image descriptions in one place.

The free Alt Text for PowerPoint editor lets you edit alt text for multiple PowerPoint images at once. It brings a repetitive accessibility task into a simple workflow, so you can focus on writing descriptions that convey the meaning of your images.

Put your expertise into the descriptions. Make the editing easier.

Opens a separate, ad-free editor in a new tab. It processes your .pptx in your browser and does not upload your deck. Slides 1–20 are free to edit. For help writing the descriptions themselves, see the context examples.
